Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Rancho Mirage

Why Wisdom Teeth May Need to Be Removed

By the late teenage years or early adulthood, wisdom teeth may begin trying to erupt. When there is enough room and the gum tissue is healthy, they may not need to be removed. However, many wisdom teeth become impacted, partially erupted, or poorly positioned.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection, stiffness, pressure on nearby teeth, and problems with bite alignment. In some cases, cysts or other complications can develop around impacted wisdom teeth and affect the surrounding jawbone or healthy teeth.

Who May Need Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth removal may be recommended for patients with:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Pain or swelling near the back of the mouth
  • Recurrent gum irritation or infection
  • Wisdom teeth growing sideways or at an angle
  • Pressure on nearby teeth
  • Crowding or orthodontic concerns
  • Cysts or changes around the wisdom teeth
  • Wisdom teeth that are difficult to clean properly

Early evaluation is often recommended during the teenage years, especially if a dentist or orthodontist sees signs that wisdom teeth may cause future problems.

What to Expect

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

  1. Oral Examination and Imaging

Your visit begins with an oral exam and imaging to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth, the surrounding bone, and nearby structures.

  2. Treatment and Anesthesia Planning

Our team will explain whether removal is recommended, review the surgical approach, and discuss anesthesia options based on the patient's needs and comfort level.

  3. Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth may be removed using local anesthesia, IV sedation, or another appropriate anesthesia option. The right approach depends on the patient, the position of the teeth, and the complexity of the case.

  4. Recovery and Follow-Up

After the procedure, patients receive post-operative instructions for bleeding control, swelling, diet, oral hygiene, activity, and pain management. Follow-up care may be recommended to monitor healing.

Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Most patients should plan to rest after wisdom teeth removal and follow all post-operative instructions carefully. Swelling, soreness, and limited jaw opening are common during the early healing period.

Patients are typically given instructions for gauze use, soft foods, medication, oral hygiene, and activity restrictions. If you experience increasing pain, persistent bleeding, fever, worsening swelling, or any concern during recovery, contact our office for guidance.
